Born in US metropolitan areas, the culture of dining to meet people and share great quality food in homes and other relaxed venues outside of the normal restaurant setting is growing in the UK.

These exclusive culinary events are usually held by application and invitation only.

What to expect

Certainly good food, since that is the whole purpose and hopefully some imaginative menus and of course using best quality produce and ingredients that are prepared with passion. Sometimes the event will be a purely amateur affair done will all the best intentions and as much panache as any top restaurant might put on and sometimes it will be from an experienced chef or even an entire brigade or team from several establishment just wanting to break out from the confines of their employment.

Over and above that here's a checklist:

  • Minimal contributions invited to cover costs
  • Meet new and hopefully interesting people
  • Eat some fantastic food
  • Wine, beer etc. usually BYO (with small corkage cost) but some events do have licenses
  • Overnight stays can often be arranged for those intrepid diners who have travelled.
  • The venue and menu is usually confirmed just a few days prior to the event by email.
